And then there is what Temwa Chaŵinga has done to the NWSL.
Back-to-back.
2x MVP.
2x Golden Boot.
In 2024, Temwa arrived at Kansas City Current and immediately rewrote the league record book. She scored 20 regular-season goals, winning the Golden Boot and becoming the first player in NWSL history to reach 20 goals in a single regular season. She was then named the league’s Most Valuable Player.
Then she came back in 2025 and did it again.
Temwa finished the season with 15 goals in 23 regular-season appearances, earning a second consecutive Golden Boot. She followed that by winning a second straight NWSL MVP award, becoming the first player in league history to win MVP in consecutive seasons.
That places her in extraordinarily rare company.
Only Sam Kerr had previously won multiple NWSL Golden Boots. Temwa joined her with two. But the consecutive MVP distinction belongs to Temwa alone.
And she is still only adding to the record.
Since joining Kansas City in 2024, Temwa has reached 42 goals and 11 assists in 56 NWSL regular-season matches, and became the fastest player in league history to reach 50 goal contributions, doing so in 53 appearances. Kansas City has now secured her through the 2029 season.
For Malawi, the numbers matter for another reason.
Temwa is no longer simply one of the greatest footballers the country has produced.
She is one of the best footballers in the world, full stop.
And this year, she has brought that form into the national team as Malawi makes history at WAFCON and prepares for its first FIFA Women’s World Cup appearance in Brazil in 2027.
